Medicos have all of their hospital shows – so many it’s impossible to name them all, as every country has one.

But dental shows? Why the reluctance? Is it because the patients are usually rich and therefore more protective of their privacy?

But there is one dental reality TV show – it’s called Smile, starring Nigel Crocker, William Dorfman and Larissa Schrage.

Its spiel is thus:

Imagine having teeth so damaged that you can’t date, work, or even leave the house. For some people, this is their shocking reality. Smile is a bold, new series that documents the emotional and psychological journeys of people who are offered the opportunity of a lifetime – the chance to smile. Watch as people attempt to fix their lives by fixing their teeth.

Reality TV is not for everyone. But the fact is there’s a lot of theatre and drama in wisdom teeth removal for a start – and it’s pretty gory and gruesome for people who like their visual entertainment to feature a fair amount of flesh and blood.

And television can get very micro and still be entertaining, for example highlighting obscure things like dentists in Gaythorne for crying out loud. WTF? Yep. What are you watching?

When you look over the list of dental services catalogued by the Australian Dental Association you will see drama and theatre in pretty much every treatment. So come on Australia, who’s gonna make Australia’s first dental reality TV show happen?
